For example you have a hand + glove (attached/combined to one model) and you want to select faces of the hand you can't. Because you can't select the faces from inside of the hand and from outside you will only get the faces of the glove. Selecting the glove as an element, clicking the right mousebutton and selecting "hide selection" will not work.
But this will work: select the glove as an element and klick "hide" in the right menü.
If a modifier is attached between you editable poly/mesh and the unwrap uvw (for example "physique" or something), the elements will unhide if you select the uv-modifier. To avoid this, create a new editable poly/mesh modifier before the unrwap uvw.
